Damaraland Camp
Damaraland Camp is a Wilderness camp of ten tents, run with the local community conservancy. We use it for two reasons: the country it sits in, and Twyfelfontein.
It is a short Caravan hop south from Hoanib, and on Namibia Complete you spend two nights here. One of the days goes to Twyfelfontein, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, where a San descendant reads the engravings for you. Animals, spoor and people, cut into the rock some six thousand years ago. Your guide explains what the San hunted and followed, and why they recorded it. After that you look at the rest of the country differently.
The rest of your time here belongs to the landscape. Red rock, open plains and long views, with nobody between you and the horizon. After the dunes of the NamibRand and the fog of the Skeleton Coast, Damaraland feels wide and dry and still.
The community side matters to us. Because the camp is run with the conservancy, the people who live in this country have a direct stake in it doing well, and in the wildlife that brings guests here.
It suits travellers who are as interested in people and history as they are in animals, and anyone who likes open landscapes and a slower pace. From here your Caravan carries you east to Ongava for the last two nights of the journey.
Good to know
- Twyfelfontein involves walking on rocky paths in the sun. Go in the morning and wear proper shoes.
- Soft bags only on the Caravan.
- The camp is run with the local community conservancy, so part of what you spend stays with the people who live here.
