Jao Concession, northern Delta · Botswana · private island camp, five suites and two villas
Wilderness Jao Camp
Jao has its own island in the Jao Concession of the northern Delta, with papyrus and open lagoons at the door. Of the three Okavango camps we use, this is the one where the water comes closest. There are five suites and two villas, raised among the trees above the floodplain.
The reason to come is the mokoro. You go out just after six, your poler standing at the stern, and the only sound is the water against the hull. The papyrus closes in, then opens onto a lagoon with the mist still lifting. A fish eagle calls. Later in the day a helicopter can take you over the Delta, with elephant and buffalo moving across the floodplains below.
On The Southern Arc your guide takes you, on the last evening, to a small private island where a mattress, bedding and a fire are set up for the night. You fall asleep to reed frogs and hippo, and a fish eagle wakes you.
If you are a family of four, ask for the Jao Villa: two bedrooms, sleeping four, for children aged six and older. Families of five or six add a family suite in the main camp alongside. Jao suits couples who want the quiet of the water and families who want everyone in the same boats.
On The Southern Arc a Pilatus PC-12 flies you from Kruger Mpumalanga International via Maun to the Jao strip. On The Okavango Immersion you arrive by helicopter from Xigera, and on the family journeys a short light-aircraft hop brings you across from Mombo or in from Maun.
Good to know
- Mokoro trips and walks are for ages 13 and up; younger children go out by motorboat and vehicle.
- Jao is in a malaria area. Speak to your doctor before you travel.
- The mokoro sits low in the water. For anyone who finds it hard to step down, a motorboat covers the same channels.
- The flood is usually highest around June to August, the best time for the channels.
- Soft bags only on the light aircraft and helicopter.
