Laragai is a house, not a lodge. It sits high on the Borana Conservancy in Laikipia, with fireplaces, old photographs, a heated pool, a clay tennis court and a games room, and a kitchen that cooks from the Kabati farm next door. It is only ever let to one party at a time, and it is priced on a minimum of six guests, so a family of four still has the whole house and all its staff to itself, with Mount Kenya on one side and the Northern Frontier District falling away on the other.
The Borana rhino programme is one of the most important in Kenya, and from Laragai you can track rhino on foot. Before that, two nights at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. Afterwards, Angama Mara on the escarpment above the Maasai Mara for the balloon and the plains.
Highlights
- Laragai House for your family alone, with its whole staff
- Rhino tracking on foot on the Borana Conservancy
- Giraffe at the breakfast table at Giraffe Manor
- Helicopter from Laragai over the Laikipia Plateau towards Mount Kenya
- Dawn balloon over the Maasai Mara and breakfast where it lands
- The Out of Africa picnic on the Angama escarpment

Nairobi
The only capital with a national park inside it, and Giraffe Manor's giraffes in the leafy suburb of Karen.

The route
- Day 1–2
Nairobi, Giraffe Manor
Family suites at the manor in Karen. The giraffe come to the windows at breakfast and again in the late afternoon. Day two: a private tour of the Karen Blixen Museum for the adults while the children go to the Giraffe Centre next door.
- Day 3
Nairobi to Borana
One Pilatus PC-12 or similar from Wilson Airport to the Borana airstrip. The Laragai staff meet you and lunch is on the pool deck.
- Day 4–8
Laragai House, Borana
Day four: drives for rhino, lion and Grevy's zebra, with a second vehicle if the generations want to split. Day five: horses for anyone eight and over, or a day at the pool. Day six: rhino on foot for adults and teenagers, a garden walk for the younger ones. Day seven: helicopter over the plateau towards Mount Kenya. Day eight: dinner at a long table on the escarpment edge.
- Day 9
Borana to the Mara
The aircraft flies you south to Angama Mara's airstrip. Interconnecting suites on the escarpment above the Mara Triangle, and a private vehicle and guide for your family. Angama asks for one when children under seven are travelling, and we include it whatever the ages.
- Day 10–12
Angama Mara
Day ten: morning drive into the Mara Triangle. Day eleven: the balloon at dawn, with breakfast in the grass where it lands. Day twelve: the Out of Africa picnic on the escarpment, and the forest dinner on the last night.
- Day 13
Departure
The aircraft flies you to Wilson for your international connection.
Flown by turboprop and helicopter. How we choose the aircraft
How each generation spends the days
Grandparents
The pool deck above the waterhole where elephant drink, a slow drive for rhino, a fire in the bedroom at night.
Parents
Rhino on foot with the Laragai guides, a ride across the conservancy, the helicopter towards Mount Kenya.
Children
Feeding giraffe at breakfast, riding from age eight, bird and insect walks in the garden, the games room after dinner.
The sun is going down behind the plateau and the family is on the pool deck. Below the deck is a small dam, and three elephant have come in to drink. A grandmother who has only ever seen elephant in a zoo is watching them from a few metres above, a grandchild on each side. The house manager brings drinks out without being asked. Nobody says much until the elephant have gone.
