Kigali · Rwanda · 1950s house hotel in an avocado garden
The Manor Hotel
The Manor is a 1950s house with 18 rooms in an avocado garden in the hills above Kigali, and it is where we put you for your night in the city. After the forest it is quiet and green, and dinner here is unhurried.
Kigali deserves a day of its own, and we give it one. In the afternoon a specialist takes you privately through the Kigali Genocide Memorial. You go at your own pace, with time to sit with it afterwards; nobody rushes you. Later your guide takes you to the Inema Arts Center to see the work of Rwanda's contemporary artists, which gives you a sense of the country today. Then back to The Manor for dinner.
On Gorillas, Migration & Golf this night comes before the gorillas: a Pilatus PC-12 flies you west from the Mara, with formalities cleared en route, and the next morning a helicopter takes you to Volcanoes National Park. On Uganda & Rwanda it is your last night, after the helicopter brings you back from the volcanoes, and the next morning it is a short drive to Kigali International. If your connection leaves from Nairobi or Johannesburg, your Embraer Phenom 300 takes you there.
The Manor suits anyone who wants a proper night's sleep and a gentle day between the bush and the flight home.
Good to know
- Plastic bags are banned in Rwanda. Pack without them.
- On the last Saturday morning of each month, Umuganda community work quietens the roads; we plan transfers around it.
