Fancourt, Outeniqua Course
The Outeniqua is the third of the Fancourt courses we play, and it is usually the first round of the stay. Your aircraft lands at George in the morning, you are on the estate before lunch, and in the afternoon your caddie walks you round. After a long flight from Europe or the Gulf, it is the right way to start: the legs loosen, you get a feel for the greens, and you have the measure of the estate before the Montagu and The Links.
It is a Gary Player design, ranked 22nd in South Africa by Golf Digest South Africa, and it takes its name from the mountains that stand behind it. Do not mistake it for the warm-up act. It is a proper Fancourt course, and the late light on the Outeniqua range makes it the prettiest round of the three.
You stay at the Fancourt Hotel, with dinner one night in the Fancourt Manor House, the original manor and a national monument. Our golf journeys through George run in April to June and September to November. Non-golfers have the Fancourt spa and gardens for the afternoon, and the Garden Route for the days that follow.
