Kimana Sanctuary, Amboseli · Kenya · ten-suite lodge facing Kilimanjaro
Angama Amboseli
Angama Amboseli is Angama's newest lodge, opened in 2024 in the Kimana Sanctuary on the edge of Amboseli. There are ten suites, and they look across to Kilimanjaro. When the cloud lifts, the mountain fills the view from your bed.
Amboseli is elephant country. The herds come in off the plains to feed and drink in the swamps below the mountain, and with your own vehicle and guide you can spend as long with a family of them as you like. The light here is different from the Mara: flatter, dustier, and with that white peak behind everything.
We put it in the middle of Northern Kenya, between the art and treehouse at Segera and the escarpment at Angama Mara, because it changes the pace. Three nights here are slower than the Mara, and the sightings tend to be long ones. It suits photographers and anyone who has seen the Migration before and wants a different side of Kenya.
You fly in by Cessna Caravan from Segera on the Laikipia Plateau. When you leave, the Caravan takes you west to the Mara and the strip below the Oloololo Escarpment.
Good to know
- Kilimanjaro is often clearest early in the morning and late in the afternoon; cloud can hide it for much of the day.
- The lodge has only ten suites, so dates in the July to October season go early.
- Amboseli is a malaria area; take advice on prophylaxis.
