Segera Retreat

Segera is where Northern Kenya begins, and we start the journey there because it gives you something no other camp on the route does. The retreat belongs to Jochen Zeitz, and his collection of contemporary African art is spread across the estate, indoors and out. One morning the team walks you through it, piece by piece.

The estate covers about 50,000 acres of the Laikipia Plateau, and there are only ten villas on it. Drives cross open plains and acacia country with your own vehicle and guide. Black rhino were brought back to the conservancy in 2025. We say that carefully: the reintroduction is recent, and nobody can promise you a sighting yet.

Of your three nights, two are in your villa and one is in the Nay Palad Bird's Nest, a treehouse sleepout high above the ground. Ask for it. You spend the night out under the Laikipia sky and wake to the plateau at first light.

Segera suits couples and small groups who like their safari with some thought behind it, and anyone coming back to Kenya who has already seen the Mara.

Your Cessna Caravan flies you north from Nairobi to Segera's strip. Before landing the pilot makes a low pass to move the zebra and impala off the runway. When you leave, the Caravan takes you south to Amboseli.

• Northern Kenya is at its best from July to October, the same window as the Mara.
