Sabi Sand · South Africa · six-suite bush lodge
Dulini Leadwood Lodge
Leadwood is the other Dulini lodge in the Exeter concession of the Sabi Sand: six suites, set back in the bush. We use it for the last two nights of The Cape Wilderness, after whales at Hermanus, fynbos at Gondwana and the elephant of Addo. The coast comes first on that journey and the bush comes last, and Leadwood is where you finally go looking for leopard.
Your Pilatus PC-12 flies north from Gqeberha. Over the bush strip the pilot makes a low pass to move the impala and warthog off the runway, and your vehicle, guide and tracker are waiting when the door opens.
Two nights is short, so we keep it simple. Morning and afternoon drives with your own vehicle and guide, as long at each sighting as you want, and the evenings at the lodge. The Sabi Sand is known for its leopard, and your guide will spend the time on them if that is what you came for.
Leadwood suits a couple or a small party who want a quiet lodge with no more than a handful of other guests. It is worth knowing that this is the only part of The Cape Wilderness inside a malaria area; every stop before it is malaria-free. When you leave, the PC-12 flies you to Johannesburg for your international flight.
Good to know
- Malaria area, unlike the earlier stops on The Cape Wilderness. Take your doctor's advice on prophylaxis.
- The dry winter months, roughly May to September, give the easiest game viewing.
