Fourteen nights in four corners of Tanzania. By road this would take days of driving; in your own aircraft each move is an hour or two. You start in Ruaha, far in the south, where Jongomero Camp sits alone on its river and you can walk out for two nights with no camp at all. Then north to Singita Sabora in the Grumeti concession on the western Serengeti, where the Migration crosses private land. Two nights on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. And to finish, the private atoll of Mnemba off Zanzibar, with the reef a short swim from your banda.
Highlights
- Two nights fly-camping in Ruaha
- The Migration on a private concession
- The Serengeti by helicopter
- Dinner on the Crater rim
- Stone Town on foot
- The Mnemba reef

Tanzania
The Serengeti and Grumeti
Endless plains where two million wildebeest and zebra follow the rain in a great circle each year.

Dar es Salaam · Ruaha · Grumeti · Ngorongoro · Zanzibar
The route
- Day 1–4
Dar es Salaam → Jongomero, Ruaha (4 nights)
Your Cessna Caravan meets your international arrival in Dar es Salaam and flies you south-west into Ruaha. Before landing at Jongomero the pilot makes a low pass to clear the strip, so the game viewing starts in the air. Two nights in camp on the river, then two nights fly-camping. You walk for the day with your guide into the remote south of the park, eat dinner by the fire and sleep on a bedroll under a mosquito net. There is no camp out there, and that is the point.
- Day 5–8
Ruaha → Singita Sabora, Grumeti (4 nights)
A Pilatus PC-12 takes you north to the Grumeti concession on the western Serengeti, 350,000 acres of private land. Sabora's tents stand in open grassland. When the Migration is moving across the concession, a helicopter takes you up to find the herds from the air. One morning you visit the conservation and anti-poaching centre and see how the land is protected. One evening a long table is laid out in the grass for last light.
- Day 9–10
Grumeti → &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (2 nights)
A helicopter lifts you off the Serengeti and over the highlands to the Crater rim. The lodge looks straight down into the caldera. You spend a full day on the Crater floor with your own guide and vehicle, and it is worth going down early, while the mist is still coming off the soda lake. On the second evening your butler serves a private three-course dinner on your deck as the floor, 600 metres below, goes dark.
- Day 11–14
Ngorongoro → &Beyond Mnemba Island, Zanzibar (4 nights)
A short helicopter hop to Lake Manyara, then the PC-12 east to Zanzibar. Before you cross to the island there is lunch on the Emerson Spice rooftop above the harbour and a private walk through Stone Town: the Old Fort, the carved doors, the narrow lanes of the old quarter. Then the short boat crossing to Mnemba, off the north-east coast. Four nights of diving and snorkelling the reef, and one candlelit dinner of fresh seafood on the sand.
- Day 15
Zanzibar → departure
The boat and a short drive bring you back to Zanzibar, where the Embraer Phenom 300 is waiting to take you to Dar es Salaam, Nairobi or Johannesburg for your flight home. Most guests board with sand still in the bag.
Flown by turboprop, light and super-light jet and helicopter. How we choose the aircraft
You have walked all day through the south of Ruaha with your guide, reading tracks, stopping for birds, sitting out the heat under a baobab. Now the fire is going, the table is a folding one in the open, and dinner comes off the coals. No tent, no lodge lights on the horizon. A bedroll, a mosquito net, and so many stars the sky looks overcast. Somewhere off in the dark a lion calls, and another one answers it.
