Tanzania

Tanzania gives you range, and the aircraft is what lets you use it. In fourteen nights you can walk in Ruaha in the far south, follow the Migration on a private concession in the Serengeti, look down into the Ngorongoro Crater from its rim and finish on a coral atoll off Zanzibar. By road that is days of driving. By air it is an hour or two at a time.

We use four regions. In Ruaha you stay at Jongomero Camp on its river in the remote south of the park, with two nights fly-camping: a day's walk, a fire, a bedroll and no camp at all. In the western Serengeti, Singita Sabora's tents stand in the 350,000-acre Grumeti concession, where the Migration moves through private land. On the Crater rim, &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge looks straight down to the Crater floor 600 metres below, and you go down at first light before it gets busy. And off the north-east coast of Zanzibar, &Beyond Mnemba Island is a private atoll with the reef a few strokes from your banda.

We fly you in through Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar, or across the border from the Maasai Mara, with formalities cleared on the way. A Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12 lands at the Jongomero and Grumeti strips. Helicopters link the Serengeti and the Crater rim, and the Lake Manyara strip is the way in and out of the highlands. An Embraer Phenom 300 or Praetor 600 handles the longer legs onward.

We plan Tanzania for June to October, with July to October for the Migration.
