Four courses between the Highveld and the Indian Ocean, then a reserve where you track cheetah on foot. You start at Blair Atholl outside Johannesburg, which at 8,000 yards from the back is the longest course in the country. Then you fly down to the coast and stay at The Oyster Box under the Umhlanga lighthouse, playing Durban Country Club from there. Further up the north coast you play Zimbali through the coastal forest and Prince's Grant on the cliffs, where the sea is in view on every hole. A short flight north takes you to Phinda Vlei Lodge, six suites on the edge of a pan, and you finish with a night at The Saxon.

The places
Where this journey takes you
South Africa
Johannesburg
A city in a planted forest on the Highveld, and the start of most journeys north and east.

Johannesburg · Durban · North Coast · Phinda
The route
- Day 1
Johannesburg · Blair Atholl
We meet you at OR Tambo and drive you to Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate in Fourways. The overnight suites look straight out over tomorrow's course. Rest this afternoon. Dinner is early on the estate, with a short walk across the grounds afterwards to help the body clock along.
- Day 2
Golf · Blair Atholl
Blair Atholl is No. 2 in South Africa for 2025 and, at 8,000 yards off the back tees, the longest course in the country. Let your caddie choose the tees. Non-golfers can ride at the estate's equestrian centre or go into Johannesburg's galleries with a driver, and everyone meets for a long lunch.
- Day 3
Johannesburg → Durban · The Oyster Box
The Embraer Phenom 300 flies from Lanseria to King Shaka International in about an hour, and you are at The Oyster Box in Umhlanga by lunch. Beach or pool this afternoon. Dinner is on the Ocean Terrace: grilled Mozambique prawns while the lighthouse beam starts to sweep the water.
- Day 4
Golf · Durban Country Club
Durban Country Club is No. 8 in South Africa for 2025, with a careful upgrade by Golf Data. It runs through the dunes behind the beach, and on each tee your caddie will tell you how much the wind off the sea is worth. Non-golfers have the spa and the Umhlanga promenade, with lunch looking over the water.
- Day 5
Up the coast · Zimbali Lodge · Zimbali Country Club
A short drive up the north coast brings you to Zimbali Lodge on its own golf estate. In the afternoon you play Zimbali Country Club, a Tom Weiskopf design cut through coastal forest, with the fairways opening out to the sea. Non-golfers can take the forest trails down to the beach.
- Day 6
Golf · Prince's Grant
Prince's Grant, No. 30 in South Africa for 2025, sits on the clifftops of the north coast, and you see the Indian Ocean from every hole. Your caddie gets you out early, before the wind gets up. Non-golfers have the morning at Zimbali Lodge and join you for lunch at the clubhouse.
- Day 7
North Coast → Phinda · Phinda Vlei Lodge
A Pilatus PC-12 flies you north from King Shaka to the Phinda airstrip, with a low pass first to clear the nyala and warthog off it. Phinda Vlei Lodge has six suites on the edge of a pan, and we book all six for your party. You decide when the afternoon drive leaves.
- Day 8
Cheetah on foot
Phinda has been rewilding cheetah for years, and today you track them on foot with your guide and tracker, following the signal and then the spoor through grass and sand forest. It is slow, quiet work and it holds your attention completely. After lunch and a rest, an evening drive crosses the reserve's different habitats, and dinner is by the fire on the deck.
- Day 9
Phinda → Johannesburg · The Saxon
A last morning drive, then the PC-12 takes you back to Lanseria and you are at The Saxon in Sandhurst by mid-afternoon: twelve suites and its own villas in three acres of garden. Dinner is at the hotel, as private as you want it, for your last evening in South Africa.
- Day 10
Departure
Breakfast at your own pace and a private transfer to OR Tambo for your onward flight. Your Journey Architect has confirmed seats and luggage before you leave, so there is time for the garden and one more coffee on the terrace.
Flown by turboprop and light and super-light jet. How we choose the aircraft
Your tracker lifts one hand and you stop. The signal has been getting stronger for twenty minutes and now there is spoor in the sand, fresh enough that he crouches to look at it. You stand in the grass and listen. Ahead, in the shade of a tree, a cheetah lifts her head and looks straight at you, entirely calm, then settles back to watch the plain. You stay as long as she lets you, then step back the way you came.
