The places
Where this journey takes you
South Africa
Johannesburg
A city in a planted forest on the Highveld, and the start of most journeys north and east.

Johannesburg · Sun City · Leopard Creek · Sabi Sand
The route
- Day 1
Johannesburg · The Saxon
We meet you at OR Tambo and drive you to The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa in Sandhurst: twelve suites and villas in three acres of private garden. Rest after the flight. Dinner is at Grei, Candice Philip's seasonal tasting menu and the most refined cooking in Johannesburg.
- Day 2
Golf · Steyn City
Steyn City is a Nicklaus Design course on a private estate north of the city, often called the most spectacular urban course in South Africa. Your caddie takes you round in the cool of the morning. Non-golfers have The Saxon's spa and pool. If you want to eat out tonight, Marble's rooftop grill looks out over the whole Johannesburg skyline.
- Day 3
Golf · Blair Atholl · Johannesburg → Sun City
Blair Atholl is No. 2 in South Africa for 2025 and, at 8,000 yards, the longest course in the country. Take your caddie's advice on the tees. Non-golfers fly ahead by helicopter to the Palace of the Lost City and have the pools for the afternoon. The golfers follow after lunch, forty minutes over the Magaliesberg to Sun City.
- Day 4
Golf · Gary Player Country Club
The Gary Player Country Club has been ranked among the world's top 100 courses four times, and it hosts the Nedbank Golf Challenge. You play it in the morning, before the heat builds. Non-golfers spend the morning in the Palace spa and gardens, and everyone meets for a long lunch.
- Day 5
Sun City → Lowveld · Private lodge near Leopard Creek
Your Embraer Phenom 300 flies from Pilanesberg to Malelane on the southern edge of the Kruger. You stay at Buhala Lodge, ten minutes from Leopard Creek, above the Crocodile River with the Kruger on the far bank. The afternoon is yours to rest, or to go out along the river with your guide before sundowners.
- Day 6
Golf · Leopard Creek Country Club
Leopard Creek is No. 3 in South Africa for 2025 and home of the Alfred Dunhill Championship. The 13th green sits above the Crocodile River on the Kruger boundary, usually with hippo in view. Your caddie knows the course and knows the river. Non-golfers go into the Kruger for a morning drive with the lodge guide and meet you for lunch.
- Day 7
Lowveld → Sabi Sand · Londolozi Granite Suites
A Cessna Caravan makes the short hop north to the Londolozi strip. On approach the pilot does a low pass to clear impala, and sometimes elephant, off the runway. The Granite Suites are six suites on the granite above the Sand River, booked for your party alone, and your guide and tracker are waiting when you land.
- Day 8
The leopards of Londolozi
Londolozi has watched its leopards for decades and keeps a record of individual animals and their lineage. Your guide draws on that record as you find them, so each leopard comes with a name and a family history. You stay at every sighting for as long as you want.
- Day 9
Sandbank dinner
Your last full day: a morning drive, a long lunch and a late-afternoon drive. Then your guide pulls up by the Sand River, where a table is set on the sandbank and lit with lanterns. Hippo call from downstream while dinner is served and the stars come out over the riverbed.
- Day 10
Departure
One more morning drive and breakfast at the Granite Suites, then a Pilatus PC-12 from Londolozi to OR Tambo for your international flight. Your Journey Architect has the luggage checked through before you arrive. Thirty days later the coffee table book of your trip reaches your door.
Flown by turboprop, light and super-light jet and helicopter. How we choose the aircraft
The lanterns are lit and there is a table for four on the sand. Behind you the bank climbs into dark riverine forest. In front of you the Sand River slides past, black and quiet. A hippo calls downstream and the others answer. Your guide pours the wine and tells you about the leopard you sat with this morning: who her mother was, and her grandmother, and the tree where she was born. Nobody reaches for a phone.
